Mystikal

Let's Get Ready

Let's face it, while Mystikal was with No Limit, he was the only reason you may have purchased the album.  If you were like me, you just avoided them like the plague.  Anyway, as I was watching Rap City, "Shake Ya A@@" came on and it had a nice beat to it.  So I took a chance and went out and bought the whole CD.  I got my money's worth.  He'll definitely have a new fan (if he does another video like the previous one - heh heh).  Anyway, Mystikal can make a non-dancing dude like myself want to get up and shake something.  It's like the banging tracks just follow one after the other.  The Neptunes helped him on the lead single and the joint "Jump".  Its pretty standard fare for the Neptunes as far as the production, but Mystikal straight rips thru his verses.  Other standout cuts are Danger, Big Truck Boys and U Would if U Could.  Beats and Rhymes make a good hip hop record.  Mystikal has proven himself an MC.

Scarface

Last of a Dying Breed

Scarface has been in this game we call rap for damn near 13 years.  His latest album is titled "Last of a Dying Breed".  He truly feels he is one of the last true "Gangsta MC's".  I have to agree with him.  There is no doubt of his Gangsta past, but many have questioned his MCing skills.  Can he still get down with the best of them?  Let's just put it this way.  If it weren't for Scarface, there wouldn't be a Dirty South.  Everyone from Cash Money, Outkast, Master P and anybody else reppin the Dirty, should thank Scarface for holding them down (along with the Geto Boys).  While on past efforts, Scarface seemed to be ahead of the game, this joint seems like he slowed it down a bit so the rest of the industry can catch up to him.  He's still reppin the street cats, but lyrically, he had to step it down for the masses.  Don't get me wrong though, Scarface has lyrics.  Check "Conspiracy Theory" and "O.G. 2 Me" for further proof.  The new position as Def Jam South President has not softened this gangsta rapper.  Believe me, if you're a fan, you won't be disappointed.

LL Cool J

The G.O.A.T.

LL Cool J has what few rappers have today, longevity.  For 15 years, LL has been putting out platinum albums.  He's had a few missteps along the way (Phenomenon, Walking With a Panther and 14 Shots to the Dome), but nonetheless, his albums have always kept the fickle hip hop audience  entertained.  With this album, LL goes back to his hard-as-hell days.  He rips the "one hit wonder" Canibus a new one on the track "Where I Belong" feat. Ja Rule.  You have to hear that one to believe it.  The joint simply titled "LL Cool J" has a tight beat (a la Biggie Smalls' "Kick in the Door").  On this joint he simply states why he's the greatest to have ever done it.  He does have two songs that I hate ("Hello" feat. Amil and "You and Me" feat. Kelly Price).  Self  explanatory.  He should have just let those hit the editing room floor.  He does have two R&B flavored joints that I do like ("This is Us" feat. Carl Thomas and "Imagine That" feat. LeShaun), but the majority of the CD is for the fellas.  He has an East Coast posse cut ("Fuhgidaboudit" feat. Method Man, Redman & DMX) and a West Coast posse cut ("U Can't F*ck Wit Me" feat. Snoop Dogg, Xzibit & Jayo Felony), which are becoming standards nowadays.  Neither are outstanding, but if you're a fan of the artists, you'll enjoy the tracks.  What LL's fans are really wondering these days though is Can he still flow?  Yup.  Check "Ill Bomb", "The GOAT", "Queens Is", and "M.I.S.S." if you need to be reassured.  This is the kind of classic material that LL's fans have been waiting for.  Go get that!

Too Short

You Nasty

Too Short is back with his nastiest offering to date, You Nasty.  What can you say?  Too Short has been rhyming damn near as long as Run DMC with nearly as much, if not more success (11 platinum and gold albums).  His style hasn't changed a bit, the beats are on point as usual, and the subject matter is the same as it ever was....straight pimpin'.  Too Short tries to say that this is his nastiest record....well, in a sense, if you include the raunchy inserts, but his topics have all been covered before on his previous albums.  Don't get it twisted though, No one can spit game like Too Short.  Check the joints "2 Bit*hes", "You Nasty", "Pimp Sh*t", and the Erick Sermon produced "Be My Dirty Love."
