Redman

Malpractice

05/01

3.5

Redman returns with album number 5 and he doesn't disappoint.  On the other hand, he doesn't push the envelope.  I guess I expected a little bit more from Reggie Noble. Every album up to this point has gotten better and better.  This one tries not to break the mold.  This is by no means a sub par album.  I'm sure you've already heard the lead single "Let's Get Dirty".  It is off the hinges and by far the best track on the album.  The skits aren't as funny as on previous efforts and kind of seem out of place.  The beats are what you would expect from Rockwilder and Eric Sermon.  They hit hard and have deep bass.  The "Soopaman Lova" series continues on this outing as well.  He's still flying 5mph with a torn cape.  In this adventure, he's searching for the man who stole his Mojo.  All in all, if you're a Redman fan, you should pick this one up.  He has plenty of one-liners that wikll have you searching for the rewind button.

Sticky Fingaz

Black Trash

05/01

3

Sticky Fingaz from the outset has always been the one to shine on most of the Onyx albums.  On his first solo endeavor, he surprisingly delivers a somewhat solid CD.  The CD is another hiphopera like Prince Paul's "A Prince Among Thieves" with several other artists helping Sticky out on some of the tracks.  "The State of NY vs. Kirk Jones" is a crazy court scene with Rah Digga as the judge and Redman & Canibas as lawyers. You have to hear this one.  Other stand out cuts are "Come On" and "Get It Up".  These two tracks are up-tempo and fits Sticky's crazy personality perfectly.  This CD is a worthwhile addition to your collection.  You'll be surprised at some of the lyrics Sticky spits.  He got mad skills.  I never thought I'd be giving him props on lyrics.  The only thing that kind of takes away from the CD are some of beats he uses.  If he had stayed away from some of the R&Bish tracks, this joint would've gotten a higher rating.  Anyway, pick this one up.

Slimm Calhoun

The Skinny

Slimm "Cutta" Calhoun is the first act from Outkast's newly formed Aquemini Records.  Being from the Dungeon Family, you know what to expect from Slimm.  Production was handled by The D.F. and Earthtone III.  This album sounds as if it was recorded prior to Stankonia.  I say this because the beats are on this album are tight, but not as tight as on Stankonia.  It sounds like Outkast spent more time on their album.  This album does have quite a few highlights.  my favorite is the first single "It's OK".  I think the guy that sings the hook is the same guy that sang the hook on Goodie Mob's "They Don't Dance No Mo".  Either way, the bass line with the little funky organ is right on line with Slimm's laid back vocals.   I can see the "Cut Up Song" bouncing all over the clubs if they release it as a single.   The bass on "All the Hustlers" rattles the trunk and re-introduces folks to Cool Breeze, the cat who invented the term "Dirty South".  Ya'll slept on his album.  I'm telling folks right now, ya'll betta stop sleeping on the Dungeon Family.  While this is a decent debut from the Calhoun with the distinctive flow, he's going to have to step up his lyrics if he wants to stand out from under the Dungeon Family's shadow.  Listen before you buy.

Trick Daddy

Thugs Are Us

04/01

People often dismiss Trick Daddy as just another booty music rapper.  He isn't.  Actually, the brother gets pretty deep and has a lot on his mind.  "Amerika" is the perfect example of his thought provoking lyrics.  In it he blasts the government and the police on their treatment of blacks in "the home of the free".  "I'm a Thug" is a slow groove with kids singing the hook.  You would think he's promoting his life style, but instead he's trying to turn kids off of it.  Buuuuut, not to turn his fans completely off, Trick has something for ya on the "Pull Over Remix" with his rhyme partner Trina.  I prefer the original, but this one might get some play in the clubs.  "Take It To Da House" is Tricks' try at a radio single.  He succeeds because it sounds just like the "Booty Call" line dance.  Other stand out cuts are "Survivin the Drought" and "Noodle".  The only reason I gave this album a 3 is because it has the other Slip N Slide artists all over it and they're kind of weak.  Not to say that Trick Daddy is a superior lyricist or anything (far from it), but when you go to levels lower than that.....damn!  Anyway, a couple more rotations before I cut a CD with my favorite tracks.  Listen before you buy.
